History of The Southern Maryland Rock & Mineral Club
The “Southern Maryland Rock and Mineral Club” was formed in 1989 at the Clearwater Nature Center at Cosca Regional Park. We joined the EFMLS (Eastern Federation of Mineral and Lapidary Societies) in 1990. The club held rock and mineral shows for 25 years, including large shows at the Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro. We continued to meet at the Nature Center until the start of Covid-19 at which time we moved to our current location. Field Trips
We usually take at least one trip a month from March to December. Most are within 200 miles. Most of our trips are in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The Field Trip Chairman announces all upcoming trips at the monthly meetings and follows-up with emails to members. The emails include directions to the site, arrival time, and appropriate tools and gear for the hunt. Everyone is responsible for getting to and from the site location using their own transportation or make carpooling arrangements with other members. After each trip the Trip Leader prepares a written report which is posted to this website. See all the trips we've taken since 2010 by clicking here. Meetings

The first club “Rock Show” was held at the Clearwater Nature Center in 1990 and was an overwhelming success with 800 visitors --- a total which was not reached again until the “25th Annual Mineral, Jewelry and Fossil Show” held in 2015 with over 1,000 attendees at the Showplace Arena in Upper Marlboro. We now hold our shows at The Old Waldorf School in Waldorf Md. where our club meets. |
